My child will never have to go through what I have. I will protect you, no matter what it takes; no matter the price...

Every mother has this wish/prayer for her girl child. Life has never been easy for women in most domestic households here and while a change is under way, there is still a long battle to be fought...

"What is this shit on my plate??"

Some days he was a normal... some days he was this monster they saw...

"This what your parents taught you?? To cook shit? Can't a man even get a decent meal !!!!"

Her eyes fixed on her cowering little girl, wearing the pink frock he got on her 7th birthday, hiding in the corner around the door. Afraid... trembling...

"I work my ass off all day and then I have to come home to this??"

She drowned in curry as the plate crashed on the floor. His hands now firmly around her neck.

"Papa... no... no... Papa... stop..."

"Shut up bitch !! Do you want some as well ??"

Both women... scared & whimpering, one gasping for breath and the other with fear in her eyes; her clothes now wet; warm urine rolling down her thighs...

"Stop.. you are hurting me... Stop please... please... don't"

"Papa... stop..." shivering now, she was pulling at his pants; tears down her pink cheeks... not stopping

He turned around and glared at her... They were used to the hitting, bruising and abusing by now... but tonight was something different. He was carrying something inside; what... they didn't know... but that scared them beyond any fear they had ever known...

She pulled free of his hands and lunged towards her daughter, covering her in her arms and he moved for them...

"Not her... what has she ever done to you??? She's just a kid... Your kid !!"

The blows did not stop.. searing pain through her with every punch; slap and hair pull... but all she could think of... was to protect her daughter...

"My daughter?? I don't even know if that's true.. All those Facebook and WhatsApp friends of yours?? You are sleeping with the whole lot... aren't you?? All I asked was a son and you got me this?? this... vermin??"

"No... don't say that to her !!"

"Why not?? She should know her place here !!" ... He tugged and pushed the little girl to one corner of the room

Turned back towards the mother...

"Papa... don't..."

"Or else what???"

There she was standing behind him... a kitchen knife.. shining in the light and yet trembling in her little hands.

"Ha Ha Ha... you little freak... I'm so scared of you right now... Come here... I'll show you how to use that thing now"

She jumped towards him as he moved towards his daughter...

"Noooooo......"

It was... a little too late...

Sitting there, frozen, in a pool of blood; even tears had failed her now. The little pink frock, the prettiest one her little girl had; now soaked in blood. All of a sudden; there was just the sound of silence piercing her ears. The body still flapping, with life slowly escaping; leaving only cold, dark death behind.

She did not even hear the knocking on the door...

"Open up... this is the police... Open up the door now !!!"

She was lost; lost to this world this moment; with her life now turned upside down...

"I'm sorry mama... I'm really sorry... He just came at me..."

"Shhh... Shhhh... my dear... Don't worry... Mamma is here. She will make it alright. Calm down. No one will ever harm you... ever"

She had made a promise to herself. No matter what. She would not let anything happen to her little girl and she intended to keep that promise ...

Author's Comments:
Anyone who hits/abuses their spouse and kids requires immediate medical and therapeutic support. It is a sign of clinical/behavioral illness and should not be ignored. If you are a victim of domestic abuse, I urge you to step forward and talk to someone - friends, family or even me. But talk. By keeping quiet you may think you are doing something righteous in sacrifice but you are actually ruining your and your kids life. Keeping quiet about abuse is not sacrifice. Open up and talk to keep yourself and your loved ones safe..
